Brunswick Stew

Virginia is known for many culinary firsts. It is believed that Brunswick Stew was first prepared in Brunswick County, VA in 1828. The stew was originally made with squirrel. Today chicken is often the meat of choice complemented by a mixture that has come to include tomatoes, potatoes, corn, and lima beans. Since agriculture is Virginia's largest industry and broiler chickens are the number one farm enterprise, locally grown ingredients are abundant for this Virginia favorite.
