State Recipes from the Living Well Book
MinnesotaMinnesota Wild Rice SoupWild Rice is a grain fundamental to Ojibwe culture. Historically, a dream about a gift of food growing on water, resulted in families finding nourishment through difficult winters. Wild rice provided stability to a culture dependent on hunting, fishing and fur trade. It is harvested by canoeing into a stand of plants, bending ripe grain heads with wooden sticks, and threshing seeds into a canoe. Wild rice continues to have special status and cultural importance. |
